Olive eats

Olive's eating is going really well.  I started out what I thought would be first steps into tastes and textures and it's turned into proper eating already!
I've been making her a delicious slurry of ground rice, formula and stewed fruit (apples, pears, blueberries tried so far) and she's eating about half a jar. Maybe nearly a whole jar tonight.  She's still sticking her tongue out and it's a bit of a trick to actually get the food into her mouth but she wants it! She's swallowing it all too...not spitting it out.  And her nappies are changing.  Enough about that.  So it looks like we're into solids...
Finger food has so far consisted of some penned, chicken breast (loved it) and slices of ripe pear (ditto).
The poor little thing doesn't have the dexterity to even grab food off the high chair tray yet she's so little so I have to hold it for her. And she can hardly sit up in the high chair too - I have to wedge her in with muslins.  But there's no doubt she's into it
So far we've had good sleep results since giving solids.  The first two nights she slept from 7pm till 4am.  Then the next night I woke her and gave her a dream feed at 11pm and she then slept until 6:30am.  All good.  Last night she regressed to her old tricks though waking at 1am and 6:30am. We'll see what happens tonight!

Olive Sleeps Through

Last night I had trouble getting Olive down at 7pm so I ended up feeding her again and finally getting her down for 8pm...and she slept till 6am...result! Perhaps it was the weetbix...? Obviously silly old Mum didn't head to bed until after midnight last night.  The thought that I missed the opportunity to bag myself 8 hours sleep just makes me want to cry!
Until now Olive's sleeping has been:
• Down at 7pm
• Dreamfeed when I head to bed (10pm - midnight)
• Wakes for a feed between 3am-5am (usually 7-8min on the breast then straight back to sleep)
Which isn't too bad! But I haven't had more than 3-4 hours unbroken sleep for a looong time now.
I've experimented with dropping the dream feed and I initially I found that she would wake as normal at around 3am. But that was okay...at least I could grab an early night. Or so I thought.  Very quickly I learned that if I dropped the dream feed then she would then wake me for a feed twice in the night. Anywhere from 11pm-1am and then again 4am-5am which was worse than previous. Unless Joel and I had decided to try and head out for a date when she would wake at 9pm.  Grrr!
I think that's been one of the more difficult thing with Olive's sleep, the unpredictability. Here's hoping we'll all be getting a full nights sleep with soon.

Eating!

Yesterday I gave Olive her first food!
She had some mashed banana and some Greek yoghurt. Just a tiny bit of each. She seemed keen and was going for more.  Or perhaps she was just trying to have a gnaw on the lovely silicone spoon (thank you Aunty Dot!)
Today I gave her more banana and some weetbix mixed with formula. Then she had a suck on a bread stick.  She pulled some funny faces when she got the thick weetbix paste in her mouth.  Again I'm not sure if the food is an unnecessary evil in order to play with the lovely chewy spoon.
But there were black squiggles in her happy today so she obviously ate some banana yesterday and she managed to digest it (unlike Elsie who had the infamous "10 day delay" after her first taste of banana)

Olive Rolls Over

Today Olive rolled from front to back. She is really alert and keen to move. She is starting to really want to mouth objects now...gives your fingers a good chew when they are available. But she doesn't really have enough control of her hands and arms to bring toys to her face. She has been swatting and batting at toys for weeks now but still isn't reaching out to grab things. Shouldn't be too long at this rate!
She still has a really strong suckle reflex and loves to settle herself to sleep by suckling. She's showing a lot of interest in her soft toys especially 'Palsy Panda' and I think she'll adopt something as a comforter soon but, again, she is just lacking the arm control to grab her toy and bring it to her face. She keeps inadvertently pushing them away from her. Bit of a worry her pulling soft toys onto her face when she's in her crib anyway I suppose. I might try to see if I can find a nice light piece of muslin or fabric with a contrasty pattern on it instead.
Wow, right now she is really trying to roll from her back to her front. This big baby is going to be on the move early I think.
